Celtic
Fields
Another
aspect of the past which is still apparent in Dorset and in the East
Winterborne Valley in particular is the presence of 'Celtic' fields. These
strips of land, still visible from the air and under a low sun, were mistakenly named and are
now thought to date back
to much earlier times. These field systems
of cultivation
patterns were sometimes arranged apparently to miss existing Bronze Age
barrows and dykes which are likely to be pre-Roman and frequently appear
to be later than the Celtic fields.
