Winterborne Houghton - Milton Abbas, circular walk - 5 miles

Page 3

11. Bear left onto the road and in 150 yds at a bridleway sign, go through a pedestrian gate on the right. You are now going East and should soon see Winterborne Houghton in the valley and Cranborne Chase again on the skyline.

Skirt the wood on the right and bear right at a blue bridleway sign approx. 75 yds from the gate.

Follow a rather faint track that runs roughly along the contour line for a few hundred yards before bearing gently left and slightly downhill. Aim for an isolated post (this has a blue bridleway sign on the reverse side only).  Sadly this post has now disintegrated and has been removed.

Look for a TV transmitter mast in the middle distance about 3 miles away (this may not be visible if misty) and walk towards it between the trees.

As you emerge from the trees look to the left where you will see on the adjacent hill, the ridges of some ancient 'Celtic Fields'. However, these are only readily visible in a low evening sun.

12. You should now see the field gate at the 600 ft contour that you passed on the way out (810 038).

Retrace your steps down the track and into the village finishing at the telephone box where you started.
