Winterborne Houghton - Milton Abbas, circular walk - 5 miles

Page 1

1. Start from the telephone box in the village centre, near the church (Grid Ref: ST819 045).

Take the 'no through road' signposted to Higher Winterborne Houghton which passes through the village. Where the dwellings end and the road narrows, continue ahead until the road turns sharp right. At this point you will see the entrance to Whiteways Farm on your left and the drover's track straight ahead .

2. Continue ahead up the track with trees on your right and Whiteways farm on your left (muddy in winter). Climb steeply toward a field gate. You are now approx. 590 ft (180 m) above sea level.

3. Go through the gate and follow the well worn track to the left to another gate (810 036). Look out for cowslips in the Spring.

Go through the second gate, following the blue bridleway sign and keep left of the hedge - look for views of the village below on the left, and Cranborne Chase on the skyline behind the village.

4. In 300 yds pass through a pedestrian gate beside double farm gates and turn right on to a metalled road (811 033). This is the highest point on the walk at approx. 720 ft (220 m).

5. In 30 yds stop at a metal gate on the left - admire the view on a clear day from the Isle of Wight on the left (about 38 miles) towards Weymouth on the right with Poole Harbour in the centre (about 20 miles).

In 150 yds, reach a junction where the main road turns sharply left (809 031). There is a lodge in front of you and a bridleway sign pointing to the left toward Milton Park Wood.
